Get Your Bloods Done (Your Annual Service Check… For You)

Getting your bloods done isn’t about hunting for problems—it’s about setting a baseline. Think of it as your body’s annual service check. You wouldn’t wait for your car to start smoking before topping up the oil (well… hopefully). The same goes for your health—maintenance before meltdown.

Here’s what I recommend checking at least once a year (and yes, you can bring snacks for moral support):

  • Full Blood Count & Iron Studies – Your all-round energy and immunity report. If you’re feeling flat or dizzy or you could nap standing up, this is where to look.
  • Thyroid Function (TSH, T4, T3) – Because a sluggish or overactive thyroid can impersonate stress, anxiety, or perimenopause and have you chasing the wrong fixes.
  • Vitamin D & B12 – Key players for mood, nerve health, and energy. Low levels can make you feel like you’re running on airplane mode.
  • Cholesterol & Lipids – Prevention is always cheaper (and calmer) than treatment.
  • Liver & Kidney Function – The silent heroes keeping your internal plumbing clear; let’s give them a little appreciation check.
  • Blood Glucose (HbA1c) – For long-term sugar control. Even if you’re not diabetic, it’s good to know where you sit before the numbers start creeping.

And depending on your age, history, and risk factors, add these:

  • Mammogram & Cervical Screening – Not the highlight of the year, but skipping them isn’t an act of rebellion, it’s a risk.
  • Bone Density Scan – Especially post-menopause, because strong bones are the scaffolding of a strong life.
  • Skin Checks – Because “slip, slop, slap” is great, but WA sunshine plays the long game.

This isn’t doom and gloom, it’s data with heart. Knowing your numbers gives you power. When you understand what’s happening inside, you can make tweaks before tiny things turn into big things. Knowledge is calm, and calm is exactly where we want to live.
